Fred Engel, CPBE, ATSC3, is a widely respected leader in the broadcast media industry. He and his teams have been nationally recognized for work in developing creative applications for NEXTGEN TV, driven by ATSC 3.0. His work has won numerous awards including the 2017 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Pilot Innovation Grant Competition, the Best Television Paper awarded at the 2022 NAB BEIT Conference, Best Paper at the 2022 IEEE BTS BMSB Conference, and the NAB 2023 Technology Innovation Award. In 2020 Fred was elected to, and now serves on, the ATSC Board of Directors, the first public broadcaster in that role in many years.
He has been in the broadcast industry since 1978 with work at WTTW Chicago, at a Systems Integrator, Kentucky Educational Television, and PBS North Carolina. He retired in August of 2024 and began his consulting business, Fred Engel Technology Consulting, LLC. He continues his efforts to expand ATSC 3.0 efforts throughout the world.
He has presented many times on the capabilities of ATSC 3.0. He has traveled to Canada, Spain and Brazil to share his experiences with ATSC 3.0 and how it can be used to enrich, education and protect the public.
