NATAS: Engineering Excellence: Defining and Advancing the Emmy® Standard

As broadcast technology evolves, the bar for engineering excellence continues to rise. Between foundational broadcast systems and rapidly emerging technologies, where is innovation delivering real, lasting impact? Leaders behind the Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards examine how excellence is evaluated, how industry standards evolve, and which frontiers of innovation are most likely to define the next generation of broadcast engineering. This discussion offers a rare perspective on how engineering decisions move from development and deployment to industry-wide benchmarks and recognition.

Full Abstract:

The broadcast industry is navigating a period of rapid technological change, driven by IP-based workflows, cloud architectures, AI-enabled tools, and evolving content distribution models. Amid this pace of innovation, defining engineering excellence—and distinguishing meaningful advancement from short-term trends—has never been more critical.

This panel brings together leaders involved in the Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards to provide insight into how excellence is identified, evaluated, and elevated to industry standard. Panelists will discuss the criteria and considerations used to assess innovation, the role of engineering rigor and real-world deployment, and how emerging technologies are shaping the future of broadcast infrastructure and workflows.

Moderated by National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences CEO Adam Sharp, the session will explore the intersection of innovation, standards, and recognition—offering attendees a deeper understanding of how engineering achievements ultimately influence industry practice and long-term impact.
