SMPTE: OGraf — Making Broadcast Graphics Open and Interoperable

Saturday, April 18 | 2:55 – 3:10 p.m. | N259

SMPTE Visual Innovation and Brilliant Engineering Conference

Broadcast graphics have long been locked into closed, end-to-end vendor systems — making it hard to mix tools, reuse assets, or move between platforms. OGraf, an open specification developed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), is changing that.

OGraf lets production teams design a graphic once and use it across multiple compatible renderers. Built on familiar web technologies like HTML5 and Web Components, graphics work seamlessly whether the editor, control system, and renderer come from the same vendor or different ones entirely. Vendors remain free to innovate and extend functionality — but on a shared, open foundation that guarantees interoperability across the production chain.

The result: fewer bottlenecks, more creative freedom, and graphics that work across live broadcasts, OTT streams, post-production timelines, and more.

In this session, you’ll get an inside look at how an OGraf graphic is structured, how the Control API works, and what this specification means for the future of broadcast graphics workflows.

The EBU is the world’s leading alliance of public service media organizations, representing over 116 member broadcasters across 56 countries — including the BBC, ARD, France Télévisions, and many others.
