Carolyn Giardina is a senior entertainment technology and crafts editor, journalist, and author whose work explores the evolving relationship between creative artistry and emerging technology.
She has held editorial staff roles at The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and SHOOT, covering disciplines ranging from cinematography, editing, sound, and VFX to the broader impact of technological change across production, post-production, exhibition, and consumer electronics. Her reporting has examined major industry inflection points, including the DTV and digital cinema transitions, and continues to analyze advancements in AI and next-generation workflows.
While at The Hollywood Reporter, Carolyn helped launch Behind the Screen, writing its stories and hosting its companion podcast, and she hosted the publication’s Cinematographer and Animation Roundtables.
Her contributions have been recognized with American Cinema Editors’ Robert Wise Award; the International Cinematographers Guild’s Technicolor William A. Fraker Award; Women in Technology Hollywood’s Leadership Award; and the Advanced Imaging Society’s Distinguished Leadership Award.
A dedicated educator and industry leader, Carolyn is a lecturer at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts, co-author of Exploring 3D (Focal Press), a SMPTE Fellow, and a frequent conference moderator and speaker for organizations including SMPTE, IBC, NAB, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
