Ross Video Grows from Basement Beginnings to Industry ‘Anchor’ at NAB Show

From a World War II trainer airplane to Olympic-level sports production, Ross Video showcases decades of innovation at the premier trade show for broadcast and live production.

For Ross Video, attending NAB Show is a cornerstone of its calendar year.

“Even 30 years ago, when I was hiring new engineers,” said David Ross, chairman and CEO of Ross Video, “I would say: ‘You don’t know this yet, but your life is going to revolve around something called NAB Show.’”

The company’s presence at NAB Show reflects the same ingenuity that sparked its early days: When David Ross was 9, his father rebuilt a World War II trainer airplane in their Montreal basement and sold it for $3,500 — the company’s first and only outside investment. That ingenuity and determination laid the foundation for Ross Video’s culture of innovation.

Today, Ross Video provides live-production solutions in more than 110 countries, serving clients ranging from schools to major sports leagues, all of which is on full display at NAB Show.

“You’d be out of your mind not to come to NAB Show,” Ross said. “It’s the biggest trade show in our industry.”

Growing into Their Booth

After exhibiting at NAB Show for more than 33 consecutive years, Ross Video considers itself an “anchor” on the show floor. Every detail of their booth is designed to welcome attendees while showcasing their high-quality products.

“This is our chance to show the full breadth of the portfolio of everything we have to all our customers,” Ross said. “There is no other representation of who Ross Video is than coming onto our show floor and getting a tour.”

In the early years, they invested in booths larger than they could afford, projecting confidence and ambition. Today, their space has to meet surging demand. “It’s shoulder-to-shoulder packed in every way you can imagine,” Ross said. “We grew into our booth.”

The payoff is clear: unmatched foot traffic, a steady pipeline of new business and the ability to connect with customers face to face. “There’s nothing like giving your best customers a hug,” Ross said. “You can’t do that any other way.”

Pushing Boundaries in Sports Tech

Sports production remains the lion’s share of Ross Video’s business. NAB Show provides the perfect stage to demonstrate their leadership.

From spidercams that deliver olympic-level shots to real-time sports analytics with the PIERO product, Ross Video constantly pushes the limits of what’s possible. Attendees can see and try the tools hands-on, which reinforces trust, a top priority for Ross Video.

“Any sort of purchase, in the end, is based on trust,” Ross said.

This year, Ross Video highlighted advances in streaming, cloud-based transport and HTML5 graphics that unify broadcast and digital workflows. In one case, the company estimates saving nearly $1 million annually using new cloud-based transport cards.

You’d be out of your mind not to come to NAB Show … It’s the biggest trade show in our industry.

Reaching New Audiences

While NAB Show is known as the premier broadcast trade show, it has evolved to attract diverse stakeholders from across the media and entertainment industries. For Ross Video, that diversity is crucial, helping the company connect with clients in new sectors while staying at the forefront of technology.

This year also marked Ross Video’s 50th anniversary — a milestone that was celebrated with a keynote ahead of the Show. Drawing nearly 1,000 attendees and 2,000 livestream viewers, for Ross, it was the perfect way to honor the past while looking to the future. And at the very place that has defined so much of their journey.

“We’re always trying to have the best NAB Show ever,” Ross said. “And we’ve been doing that for like 33 consecutive years.”

Half a century after its humble beginnings, Ross Video continues to innovate and inspire, demonstrating that the same grit and creativity that started in a Montreal basement still powers its leadership on the world stage — right on the NAB Show floor.
