Patrick Healy

Assistant Managing Editor at The New York Times

Patrick Healy is an accomplished journalist and editor currently serving as assistant managing editor, overseeing Standards and Trust. Prior to this role, Patrick was the deputy editor of The New York Times Opinion section. In that role, he oversaw key areas including Op-Ed essays, Opinion Video, and popular podcasts like “The Ezra Klein Show” and “Sway.” 

Healy has a distinguished career at The Times spanning over 16 years. Before his current position, he served as the politics editor, leading the paper's coverage of the 2018 midterm elections and the 2020 U.S. presidential election. During this time, he ran the coverage of the presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as races for control of the Senate and House.

As a reporter for The Times from 2005 to 2016, Healy was a national political correspondent, extensively covering the 2008 and 2016 presidential elections. He also served as a deputy culture editor, where he was the lead editor on the investigation into sexual misconduct by comedian Louis C.K. This coverage was part of The Times’s work that received the Pulitzer Prize for public service for its reporting on sexual harassment. 

Prior to joining The New York Times, Healy was a reporter for The Boston Globe from 2000 to 2004. During his time there, he worked as a war reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan and covered higher education. His work on higher education earned him the Livingston Award in 2001 and made him a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting.

Healy graduated with a B.A. in English from Tufts University, where he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Tufts Daily. He grew up in Scituate, Massachusetts.
